Flights of Fancy Novel Study

Last week we completed our very first novel study project of the year! We are very proud of all the hard work that went into our projects. We LOVE the fantasy genre! Please enjoy our work below.

Fantasy is a genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary plot, theme or setting. Many works within this genre take place in imaginary worlds where magic and magical creatures are common...fantasy comprises many works from myths to legends to fairy tales and beyond (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy).

1. Chapter Summaries-Write a summary for each chapter in your novel. A summary should include setting, characters, and events from the chapter.  
AST 1.2 - (Key Ideas) - Determine Theme  :  I can determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in a text, and summarize the text.

2. Character Fact Sheets-Choose two characters from your novel. Complete a character fact sheet for each one.
AST 1.3 - (Key Ideas) - Describe Characters  :  I can describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions).

3. Relative Pronouns and Adverbs-Find 5 relative pronouns and/or adverbs in your novel. Record the sentence, underline the pronoun or adverb and note the page number.
 AST 1.1 - Relative Pronouns  :  relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that) and relative adverbs (where, when, why).

4. Mythology Allusions-Choose 3 mythological allusions. Include the allusion and the explanation of what it means in your own words. Find a matching circumstance, event, character trait, setting or other element from your novel that fits each allusion.  
AST 1.4 - (Craft-Struct) - Determine Meaning  :  I can determine the meaning of words and phrases used in text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology. 

5. Capitalization-Find 5 words that are capitalized in your novel. Record the sentence, underline the word and explain why that word is capitalized using the rules we discuss in class.
AST 2.1 - Capitalization  :  I can identify and use correct capitalization.

6. Vocabulary-Find 10 interesting words in your novel. Provide a part of speech, definition, sentence and drawing for each word. 

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.4.4: I can determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 4 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

7. Book Review-Write a book review about your novel. Include a strong opinion about your novel. Include reasons that support your opinion. Give examples from your novel that tell about your reasons. Restate your opinion.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.1: I can write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. 

8.. Presentation-Using the observational drawing technique taught in class, recreate the cover of your novel. Include the title and author.
