Butterflies, Wabi-sabi, and Alter Wiener-Holocaust Survivor

This year our butterfly project took some unexpected and amazing turns. Traditionally, the fifth grade raises caterpillars to butterflies to study life cycles...

We came across a poem related to butterflies...

One of our wonderful parents offered to do a butterfly inspired art project with our students plus an art history lesson...

the Japanese art of Wabi-sabi: imperfect, incomplete, broken natural or man-made objects, the acceptance of imperfection.

This parent also made the connection between our studies to a local Holocaust survivor who often speaks to school and adult groups and managed to schedule a presentation with Alter Wiener for our fifth graders...

The students were stunned, inspired, and moved by Alter Wiener's presentation...

They wrote letters...

And we released our butterflies...
