Fifth Grade Memories...

We have been working on our memoir projects for over a month now. We started by collecting pictures and artifacts from our elementary years. We used these to help us remember the most powerful memories, the ones that stuck out most in our minds. Some were happy, some sad, some angry, some embarrassed, some excited.... We learned how to write a memoir...taking one little seed of an idea, connecting it to an emotion....putting the reader in our shoes...using strong words and descriptions to make them feel the feelings we had.

We had an actual scrapbooking expert mom from my class last year come in and show us how to layout, place, enhance, accentuate, and connect our visuals to our writing. Thank you, Toni!!!

For our fifth grade memoir, we did something a little different. Students wrote a letter to me telling what they have learned this year, what was challenging, what they adored, what makes them-them, what makes me-me, and what they will take with them to middle school.

We do this project every year but our students this year wrote me the most beautiful, incredible letters I have ever received. Some of them I know I will be treasuring and looking back on for years to come.  I told them to write so powerfully that it would make their parents cry. I think they took this advice to heart when writing to me! I love our kiddos!

Here is a link to their fifth grade letters...

I hope you can come in and see the walls decorated with our fifth graders' memories and read some of their stories and see how much they have grown over the years. Memoirs will be up till the last week of school. Check out the pics below!
